Tattoo culture and garment printing both come with their own vocabulary. This glossary covers the terms that appear most often across Original Renegade without pretending every style has one rigid definition.
Tattoo terms
American Traditional / Traditional — A Western tattoo tradition developed across generations of working tattooers, known for strong outlines, controlled detail, solid colour and recurring motifs such as roses, eagles, panthers, daggers and swallows. Norman "Sailor Jerry" Collins was an influential figure, not the sole inventor or codifier of the style.
Old School — An informal label often used for traditional Western tattooing. People use the term differently, so it is better treated as a broad descriptor than a technical rulebook.
Neo-Traditional — A later style that keeps strong outlines and readable shapes while usually allowing broader colour, more modelling and more elaborate detail than classic traditional work.
Flash / Flash Sheet — Pre-drawn tattoo designs displayed as ready reference or selectable artwork in tattoo shops. Read What Is Tattoo Flash?.
Irezumi — A Japanese term associated with tattooing. In English-language tattoo discussion it is often used for large-scale Japanese-style work, but it should not be treated as one narrow list of motifs or one single method.
Memento Mori — Latin for "remember you must die." In art and tattooing it refers to imagery that reminds the viewer of mortality, including skulls, reapers and hourglasses.
Motif — A recurring subject or symbol within artwork, such as a rose, dagger, eagle or panther. See our Traditional Tattoo Motifs guide.
Printing and production terms
DTF / DTFilm (Direct to Film) — Artwork is printed onto transfer film, adhesive powder is applied and cured, and the transfer is heat-pressed onto the garment.
DTG (Direct to Garment) — Textile ink is printed directly onto the garment and heat-cured. Dark garments normally need pretreatment and a white ink base.
Screen Printing — Ink is pushed through a mesh stencil onto the garment. Separate screens or separations are commonly used for different colours.
Halftone — A print-reproduction method that uses dots to create the appearance of tone. It is not the same thing as stippling or dot shading drawn into tattoo artwork. Read Halftones Explained.
GSM — Grams per square metre: a measurement of fabric weight. Higher GSM generally means heavier fabric, but it does not by itself tell you softness, quality or durability.
Combed Cotton — Cotton that has been combed to remove many shorter fibres before spinning, generally producing a smoother, more uniform yarn. Final fabric quality still depends on yarn, knit and construction.
Fit and garment terms
Oversized Fit — A deliberately roomier cut designed to hang looser than a standard fit. It is a garment shape, not simply a recommendation to buy several sizes larger.
Graphic Tee — A T-shirt where printed artwork is a main visual feature rather than just a small logo or plain finish.
Streetwear and culture terms
Streetwear — A broad category of casual clothing shaped by youth culture, skateboarding, music, sportswear and many later subcultures. There is no single modern uniform.
Alternative Streetwear — A loose label for streetwear influenced by tattoo culture, punk, metal, goth, horror, underground graphics and adjacent scenes. Read What Is Alternative Streetwear?.
Gothic / Goth-influenced — Dark visual references that can include gothic architecture, romanticism, horror, religious iconography or music-subculture cues. Not every dark garment is part of goth subculture.
Occult — Imagery connected with esoteric, ritual or supernatural symbolism. In clothing it is often used aesthetically as well as literally.
Small Run / Drop — A limited production release rather than permanent open-ended stock. Whether a design returns depends on the brand and the specific release.
