GSM appears on clothing specifications all the time, but it is rarely explained clearly. It is useful because it gives you one measurable clue about the weight of a fabric.
What GSM stands for
GSM means grams per square metre. It describes how much a square metre of a fabric weighs. A higher GSM usually indicates a heavier fabric; a lower GSM indicates a lighter fabric.
Why it matters more than "cotton" alone
Knowing that a T-shirt is made from cotton does not tell you how heavy, dense or structured the fabric will feel. Two cotton tees can have noticeably different weights and drape, so GSM helps add useful context.
Rough reference points
There is no single universal grading system for "lightweight", "midweight" and "heavyweight" clothing, and construction matters as well as GSM. As a rough guide, many lightweight tees sit below about 150 GSM, many everyday tees fall around 150–200 GSM, and tees above roughly 200 GSM are commonly marketed as heavyweight. Hoodies are typically made from heavier fabrics again.
For shorts, fabric weight changes the feel just as much. Our current streetwear shorts use 280gsm brushed-back fleece, giving them a more substantial structure than lightweight jersey shorts while keeping a relaxed fit.
What GSM means for a printed garment
Fabric weight can affect how a garment hangs, stretches and supports a print, but GSM alone does not determine print durability. The print method, ink or transfer system, curing, garment construction and washing routine all matter.
